A TALENTED finance worker died when he wandered onto railway tracks after celebrating a £5,000 bonus cheque, an inquest has heard.
Hard-working Leigh Robinson, 37, of Caldew Avenue, Gillingham, had enjoyed a night out with his brother and pals when he tried to make his way home from Rochester railway station.
CCTV pictures taken just before 2.45am on April 4 at the deserted station showed Mr Robinson unsteady on his feet and wandering into the distance.
His body was spotted on the London-bound tracks inside the Fort Pitt tunnel by the driver of an empty train just after 6am.
The hearing, held at County Hall, Maidstone, on Thursday, September 30, was told Mr Robinson was a popular and dedicated member of a finance team based at King’s Hill, near Maidstone.
He had completed a mathematics degree and was considered a high flyer with a bright future ahead of him.
Mid Kent and Medway Coroner Roger Sykes was told Mr Robinson was not a regular drinker but was celebrating the end of a long and difficult work project when the tragedy happened.
Pathologist Dr David Rouse, who carried out a postmortem examination, gave the cause of death as electrocution and alcohol intoxication.
Recording a verdict of accidental death, Mr Sykes said: “This is clearly nothing other, and a most tragic accident.”
After the hearing Mr Robinson’s father Tony Robinson paid tribute to his son.
He described the former Rainham Mark Grammar School pupil as a very intelligent and diligent person.
He said: “He was very popular and very well thought of at work.
“He worked very hard and always wanted to do well.
“He was a typical man, into his X-box and things.
“We are still trying to come to terms with his death.”
