Myself and my partner ate here for the first time today and, overall, we were very impressed. Basically, they had two menus: one full of the usual stuff you would expect from a Chinese in Medway and another one full of genuine, fresh cooked Chinese dishes that you might not have chosen. The difficulty, of course, with choosing from an unfamiliar menu is that you are, in effect, blind tasting. However, we got great suggestions from the staff about both starters and mains. The real menu was also extremely useful as it had photos of the dishes to help you make up your mind. Consequently, we were talked out of having 2 kelp starters as they felt (rightly) that would be too much and the suggestion to add a simple boiled rice along with my double cooked belly pork was also wise. Best dishes we had: a vegetarian aubergine dish, the kelp and a spicy beef dish that isn't yet on the menu but they gave us a sample of. That one will be a winner. Sally and I loved the fact that the people behind this restaurant give a damn about the quality of what they are offering. They also spent a lot of time educating not just us but other diners about their cuisine. This is a cut above every other Chinese restaurant we've eaten at in Medway. And, at a price point of around £50 including 2 courses, 2 coffees and a bottle of wine for two, it has value. If you are prepared to expand your horizons in terms of asian cooking (and you should) then definitely give it a go.

A slice of China on your door step.
Xiankerlai (pronounced sian ker lie) is an authentic Chinese restaurant catering for the true taste of ...
We gave this a try as the inerior spoke volumes and oozed a serious take on professionalism. We arrived not exactly looking the part, nonetheless were treated extremely politely and respectfully. The genuine interest given by the young wine waiters when unsure how to open a bottle of champagne wasdelightful! We arrived as they opened and the manager was momentarily engaged ,so we had no problem showing them how best to keep the ceiling 'dent'free. A varied unusual menu with all the familiar too. The food is tunning, decor the same. £55 food /champagne . You pay for what you get, that isn't dear. I didnt eat in chinese restauransts anymore, substandard food and attiudes. This restaurant is going to knock all the rest for six. Excellent !

With two of the longer standing Chinese restaurants in Rochester now closed, we decided to give this restaurant a go, hoping that it would fill the gap left by the previous places we visited. We were not disappointed - really impressed, in fact. Having sampled some of the really good Chinese restaurants in London, this is an equal match to any of them -beautifully designed interior, very friendly staff, stunning food - everything you would wish for. This has certainly become our No. 1 Chinese restaurant in the area and we will definitely be returning again and again.
Went into the new Xiankerlai restaurant in Rochester High Street today for a "tour" and have to say that I haven't seen anything like this in Kent. (Or maybe even London) Superb interior, great menu, great staff and the upstairs dining venue is simply stunning. They have obviously spent a lot of money on the furniture and fixtures and it shows. Will be visiting soon with the better half.
