The news of the upcoming General Election will either light a fire in your belly or - like the lovely gentleman I spoke to today - have you reaching for the travel brochures!

The Street of Power
-
Conservative leader David Cameron
-
Prime Minister Gordon Brown
Either way, during a spring season when we'll have no control over the weather system, the political climate is one we can have a hand in shaping in Rochester this year. To do so you need to be registered on the electoral register, however, this isn't automatic and has to be renewed every year. Once there though, and providing you're over 18 years old on election day and a British citizen, you can vote in the general election. It might send you out of your way for a few minutes - but at least you get to crow if your party wins or moan if the result doesn't go your way! No vote, no say!
There are three different ways to vote: In person, with your poll card at the polling station, which will be open from 7am till 10pm; via post, for which you need to apply, but no need to specify your reasons; by proxy - you can appoint someone to cast your vote for you, however, you do need a specific reason for this (eg. if you're away on holiday or have a disability).
For further information on registering to vote, visit the About My Vote website and make sure you exercise your right!

Thank you Ozzie - I do beg Ms Murray's pardon, I'm sure the ladies will sort themselves from the girls too, as it were! I hope the candidates will take the opportunity to engage with their public in an informal forum like this, a kind of Rochester on line Question Time, if you like.

ReportI thought there was a park and ride there too! Maybe it only goes to Rochester, will have to check it out next time I'm passing! And yes, the live debates will be er, interesting?? Maybe for the wrong reasons, who knows!

ReportThe live debates should sort the men form the boys, I haven't seen much local presence yet apart the Labour man bemoaning the lack of park and ride to Chatham - I thought the one from the BAE place went via Chatham? I could be wrong.
