PLANS have been drawn up to turn part of a disused Victorian building in Rochester into a gym.

The former Featherstones department store at the Chatham-end of High Street could become a two-storey fitness centre, if a planning application by The Pump House Gym of Chatham gets the go-ahead.

It would be open from 9am to 9pm on weekdays and 11am to 4pm on weekends and bank holidays.

As well as housing Featherstones until it closed 30 years ago, the building’s first floor was home to a boxing club and an electronics company. It has been mostly empty since 2001.

Residents’ views on the proposal are being gathered by Medway Council.

The planning committee will make a decision on the plans on Thursday, September 30.

Via Twitter: @fellowcreative "Featherstone Dept Store & electronics building (SPEMCO) are two different premises. It seems neither are the building in question. The building photographed in yesterdays article is in fact Featherstones House (a third building entirely). Yesterdays photo article here: http://tinyurl.com/26xdew3 - it shows Featherstones House, not SPEMCO or Dept Store. The only thing all three buildings have in common is that they're all owned by Featherstones Property: http://tinyurl.com/2g9uspo

Thanks for so much info! I found this photo too http://tinyurl.com/2donlg3 of Spemco, which seems to be the 337-341 and was the home of the boxing club, so I'm assuming that's the building in question. Confusing much! If anyone else knows any more, please feel free to add!

Thank you for that, I saw some tweets that suggested there was some confusion :)

The article is correct, but the property is not Featherstone House, but the Art-Deco fronted building formerly occupied by SPEMCO Manufacturing Ltd at 337 - 341 High Street, Rochester. Further details... http://tinyurl.com/27y6ako
