Results in the Medway Council elections for 2011 are trickling in as I write!

The Medway Council Twitter feed is working overtime, to bring you each result as it's declared, and began by giving out stats too, such as in the last elections in 2007, the Conservatives won 33 seats, Labour 13 and the Lib Dems 8. Turnout was 37.5%. So you've something to compare to.

A quick scan of the feed shows the only Rochester ward declared so far is Strood North, with two Conservatives and one Labour seat. Everywhere else is pretty much going as expected.

Ooh, news just in  - Rochester East, both seats won by Labour! I shall leave it wth you there - another good Twitter feed to follow is our recent contributor John M Ward, who is very fair and reasonable in his assessments.

Please feel free to add your own thoughts and opinions about the results here.

Those were interesting stats in the main story, as although Labour "gained" five seats (nett) today, three were those they lost in Luton & Wayfield 18 months or so ago and were expected to take back. Labour and the Conservatives each have two more seats than they did after the May 2007 local elections here, 15 and 35 respectively. This raises the Blues' overall majority on the Council from eleven to fifteen (for an explanation of this see here: http://tinyurl.com/6cqysc5 ). All the hype from Medway Labour about how they were going to take seats off the Conservatives came to naught in the end, with the exception of a seat in Strood South where the 'losing' candidate lives on the peninsula - not a good choice for urban Strood, who seem to prefer locals. The see-saw of the second River ward seat has this time swung quite decisively to the Conservatives, unlike the marginal wins in last year's two by-elections for that same seat. Having Wendy Purdy back in Watling is great news for both halves of that unusual ward. Note that most of the results are at least close to what I predicted several weeks ago, which is gratifying(!)
