How do you feel about water meters?

According to the TV recently, Southern Water are one of the best companies when it comes to water repairs and managing resources. They are soon to roll out water meters across the area – but will a meter encourage you to conserve water more?

Do you leave the tap running when you clean your teeth? Do you turn off the shower while you’re shampooing? These are just two of the suggestions for managing your water use – the teeth cleaning one I was aware of but shampooing doesn’t take that long, does it? But I think about it now though, and turn off the shower: every little helps, as they say. There’s also such a thing as a flush saver bag – and this is available via Southern Water on 0800 027 6152, together with an information pack on further water savings ideas.

One of the biggest drains (no pun intended ... oh, who am I kidding) on the water reserves are our gardens, so I invested in a water butt. I haven't had to use tap water for my garden at all since I got it - will you too invest to reduce your bills? They’re usually available from garden centres – check out our local ones to see if they stock them and how much they are. (And don't forget to let us know!)

You can also obtain a water butt via Medway Council  - and comparing them to an on-line direct supplier they don’t seem to be a rip off!  I’ve seen some forum comments regarding water butts for sale through councils, that are being sold at twice the price of other suppliers! So shop around by all means but do get one – it’ll save you money in the long run and you’ll be doing your bit for the environment.

Southern Water have installed 150 meters to properties in Darnley Road in Strood. They are going to monitor them and hope to have one in every home in Medway by 2015 and estimate saving 4 milion litres of water every year. People on meters tend to use 10% less.
