The Council Tax freeze is what George Osborne (now Chancellor of the Exchequer) promised to offer councils as a deal, way back in September 2008.
It's a good thing, as Council Tax had more than doubled, throughout the country, during the Labour years: that government had caused it, among over 130 tax rises and stealth taxes. It's becoming so difficult to afford to live in Britain, though at least the overall tide is now turning, thanks to the change of national government.
Thus the Conservative-run Medway Council included this freeze in their budget; and it looks fairly "clean" to me. I don't see any nasties waiting to be sprung later, though I'm sure it isn't perfect (what is?)
Sadly, the main opposition on the council (Labour) voted AGAINST this zero-rise budget, without offering any alternative proposals and their spokesman being (as usual) entirely negative and partisan. Yet we now see Medway Labour claiming to "have frozen council tax", whereas they did nothing of the sort and in fact opposed the only submitted budget that included this provision.
It's all there on the public record, and the meeting was audio recorded as additional proof!
I do hope that Medway's residents will remember all of this when it comes to the May elections. I might not be a member of any political party these days, but I do appreciate honesty and good motivation and detest dishonesty, so I know which I shall be voting in May.
It will be for the party that froze my Council Tax, as promised more than two years ago and now finally possible. As I have very little income these days, it will make a noticeable difference, and is real. Needless to say, I shall not be voting Labour, even though I live is a (currently) Labour-held ward!
