Like our very own Hire D Handyman says: It's that time of year again, folks!

Top of the must-do list for most folk will be to have the boiler serviced before we hit the freezing weather - or maybe you're updating completely, with a whole new central heating system? Use our directory to shop around for quotes and importantly, what is included in that quote - the prices I looked for seemed to be dependant on individual circumstances, you might want to write a check list before contacting each firm, so you can compare like for like. It may seem like a large outlay in these austere times, but it's worth remembering that new laws mean boilers have to be much more energy efficient these days, cutting your fuel bills and saving you money in the long run.

Also gaining popularity of the green-coloured variety are solar heating panels - you know, what you thought was your neighbour's overblown loft conversion!? Again, the cost may seem prohibitive but there are discount schemes available and you reap the benefit of lower fuel bills and the general feeling of well being that you're Doing Your Bit. Solaris are relatively new but are a member of Checkatrade, while Energy Solutions offer not just solar panels but a whole range of 'off the grid' services to make you independent (and not at the mercy of power cuts!), with systems incorporating either small generators, wind turbines and/or solar panels which are suitable for most homes. Check out the Medway Council website to find out more about grants/loans for these – a maximum of £1500 is available and is not means tested.

Well fitted windows and doors are also a must to keep out those draughts - Miranda Double Glazing (highly rated by our user Donna) is just one of a plethora of companies offering UPVC double glazing of all shapes and sizes, usually in at least two colours. Again, shop around for like for like quotes, bearing in mind it generally works out cheaper having the lot done in one go, rather than eking it out over a period of time.

Moving outside, the garden particularly won't be getting much use from now on in (judging by how chilly it is out there now!) so it's a chance to take stock of any new plans you may have for it - perhaps some decking may be easier to control instead of those weeds? New fencing, following a summer of being bashed by assorted football, cricket and rugby balls could be your priority (it is mine! Yes, that's my garden fence you can see. I can't believe I shared it with you. Ah, well, I've waited 10 years, I can wait a little longer. Who am I kidding, no I can't. Grrrrr.) But help is at hand and Anthony or FL Mitchell will be willing and able I'm sure.

Then there's the barbecue to clean and cover, the patio tables and chairs to jet wash and don't even mention the guttering - it's bad enough now, let alone when the leaves begin falling in earnest! Why not call in Scott for some advice and ideas on what you can do with your patch? You can then spend a lazy Sunday wandering around one of our lovely garden centres for further inspiration to help create your perfect winter hassle-free outdoor space.

Undergoing any major renovation or improvements? Why not share a 'before' and 'after' picture? You might inspire the rest of us!
