The Guardian to feature Rochester in their 'Let's Move To' series!

The Guardian have put out a call for residents of Rochester to let them know their favourite haunt or pet hate about our fair city.
-
Rochester Castle and its gardens, the heart and soul of Rochester.
-
The Vines - beautiful, even with that dodgy trio, seen at the Macmillan Cherry Picnic this year! I'm in trouble now ...
-
Rochester Dickens Festival in the high street.
Their series 'Let's Move to ...' is a mini guide brochure to their featured town, so it's our chance to let everyone else know how fabulous Rochester is and why they should come to live here!
My Top 10 Reasons to celebrate Rochester:
1. Rich heritage - Rochester Castle, Upnor Castle, Guildhall Museum, Rochester Cathedral, Temple Manor, Eastgate House and the Dickens connections, Restoration House and more - bringing our history to life in the modern day.
2. Art - Numerous art galleries, a university of creative arts and an abundance of creative artists such as Zara Carpenter, Peter Reeds and so many more to inspire new dwellers, existing dwellers and visitors alike.
3. Music - a thriving Medway music scene, with regular live music in most of Rochester's high street pubs, and regular festivals in aid of good causes, such as Oxjam and Love Music Hate Racism, featuring the likes of Did Bergamn, Stuart Turner, Wheels Band and so many more than I can possibly fit in here. Pete Molinari, James Taylor and Nitin Sawhney are also Rochester lads! And we have the fabulous Castle Concerts, topped off by our home grown young talent in Under Siege!
4. Festivals - summer in the city is one long song and dance, with Sweeps, followed by Dickens, followed by Fuse, followed by Medieval Merriment, followed by more Dickens and lots of smaller celebrations along the way.
5. Open Spaces - Jacksons Fields, the RSPB Reserve at Northward Hill, Cliffe Marshes and even in the centre of town there's the little oasis's of both the castle and cathedral gardens, as well as The Vines.
And you know one of the best things about those first five? They're mostly free!
6. Community projects - the first Kent co-working space has opened for business, the campaign to Restore Rochester Castle is under way and most charities have a presence, either in a shop or via hard working individuals, such as our Local Legend Phil 'Run' Wilson.
7. Property - so much more for your money than just 20 miles up the A2! With open countryside yet all mod cons around to enjoy a decent lifestyle, it's just a 40 minute trip by car or train back to the smoke, quicker if you take the high speed train. But why would you want to go back - I don't!
8. Cafes - you'll never die of thirst in Rochester, we've got small ones, big ones, Italian ones, arty ones, olde worlde ones - take your pick!
9. Restaurants - again, no-one should ever complain of not knowing where to eat! Italian, Indian, Thai, Lebanese, French, Chinese and English or plain old pub grub, the choice is yours!
10. Shopping - you don't want to buy the same as the rest of Medway, and our independent boutiques, quirky gift and antique shops and huge book shops all offer that something different.
Have I forgotten anything? Let me know your favourite things about Rochester - but also let The Guardian know! Email: lets.move@guardian.co.uk before Tuesday! See here for an idea of how Rochester will feature.
Comments
The Guardian have published their piece and it seems not many residents bothered - he's ignored my email anyway - and hasn't even mentioned the castle! And two things we aren't short of are charming restaurants and delis!

ReportIsn't that a problem every urban place suffers from though? It isn't peculiar to Rochester and at least we can counter it with all the lovely things to be proud of - and here's a view that I found, adding to the argument why there definitely should NOT be an airport built there http://tinyurl.com/3dmbffx

If you live in one of the many Victorian terraced homes in Rochester you get home and shut the door and you're cocooned within your bricks and mortar. But if you live in a home and have a front garden that you like to keep looking nice you might find yourself with a problem.
