LightVessel 21 hosted the Loop Dance Company and LoopEd Youth Dance last night, for a site specific dance performance which formed part of Big Dance 2012.

With this year's theme being 'Water', the dance was inspired and adapted by Natalie Bond from a piece called 'Current Being', choreographed by Joss Arnott for Loop and commissioned by South East Dance.

Dancing to Zoe Keating's Xurgency, the LightVessel once again proved to be a superb backdrop, this time for an atmospheric and dramatic contemporary performance by dancers Nina Atkinson, Emmeline Harris, Maria Forbes, Leah-May Pownell and Claire Talbot.

You can view a gallery of pictures here and also find Loop on Facebook.

Dance Practitioner, Georgia Smith of GS Dance Co wrote this beautiful and evocative prose which summed up the performance perfectly:

They danced as the ship whispered the song,

As the walls of the boat came to life,

The sound of theirfeet told the history of the vessel,

As they appeared and disappeared from the ships edge,

Their dynamics reflected the textures of her shape,

Her Limbs came to life as the boat and dancer moved as one.

Following a travelling dancer as she folded into the creases,

She lead me to a space that I knew was once busy.

The person then disappeared as I watched the chains dance and listened as they told me about their journeys,

Her focus forced me to look at the objects that sat quietly, waiting to be explored,

She turned my attention to the port hole and the Sun fought to be in the room with me,

The boat clung to her as she explored its surface,

As I climbed the stairs and stepped in to the light, the breeze touched my face and the energy of the dancer did to as she showed me the fast pace life the ship once lead.

The stillness of the deck contrasts with the movements and the boat is all that separates the waves of the water and the waves of the dancer.

As the music fades with the sunlight, I am left with a head full of history and a heart full of memories.
